About Your New "Core 24" Flashcards

I created the Core 24 concept with the goal that if someone memorizes these 24 plants, they eill have a solid start on learning our region's useful flora. These species were hand selected for the following reasons:

• They're common, easy to find, and generally widespread throughout the Deep South.
• There's an even mix of both edible and medicinal plants (with a decent amount having both edible and medicinal uses).
• There is a diversity of edible plants covering leaves, shoots, fruit, roots, and wild drinks/teas.
• The medicinal plants have a broad range of uses from sleep aids & relaxants to energy boosters, antivirals, liver & skin support, etc. (A handful of them are key medicines that every aspiring herbalist should know.)
• Lastly, I tried to throw in a somewhat even mix of spring, summer, and fall plants to make the flashcard deck applicable throughout the whole growing season.

Legacy Wilderness Academy is primarily dedicated to educating students on the Coastal Plain (shown on the map). Plant life in this region is similar from end-to-end, so that foragers from East Texas all the way to the Coastal Carolinas will have access to many of the same plants.

However, even if you live north of the green area (Appalachia, Ozarks, etc.) there is still a considerable amount of overlap in plant life.
